Screening & Discussion of Michelle Handelman's Bloodsisters In-Person
Calling all gay punks, freaks, losers, and perverts: Claim your history! On Saturday, March 8, Bloodsisters: Leather, D¥kes, and Sadømasochism (1995) is screening at the Leather Archives & Museum (6418 N. Greenview). Bloodsisters is a DIY-style documentary by Michelle Handelman about the people and attitudes that shaped the San Francisco leatherd¥ke community of the 1990s, including trans trailblazer Pat Califia. Later, it was used to justify defunding the National Endowment of the Arts despite never receiving NEA funding. The film is as instructive as it is archival -- and a must-see for contemporary queer audiences.
The screening opens with two BDSM-related short films programmed by Henry Hanson: Daniel Baker-Wells's The Princess & the Peacock and Mahx Capacity's Alchemy of the Meat. Afterward, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Micco Caporale with Hanson, The Rainbow Age of Television author Shayna Maci Warner, and Chicago Leatherdyke Picnic co-organizer Miss Lola Sunshine. The focus will be on BDSM on film and leather community today.
Come early to enjoy music from the 1990s leatherdyke scene, and wear a mask, please. Tickets are $10 and available online at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/screening-discussion-of-michelle-handelmans-bloodsisters-tickets-1068885377939?aff=oddtdtcreator
